Turkish

Hello. My name is Zeynep and I am going to tell you about a special festival in my country, Turkey.

It is called National Sovereignty Children’s Day and it is on 23rd April every year. It is a special time just for children. We dress in special clothes for dances and performances. It’s not only for children in Turkey. We invite children from many other countries. This year children from 55 countries came to take part. Most of the children are about 8 to 14.

In every town there is a procession of children. They come together in a field or a town square or stadium and read the poems and speeches they have written. Sometimes there are special competitions for art or writing. There are programmes on radio and television with some of the children from other countries who perform their own traditional songs or dances.

Every year some important people in the local council or even the prime minister or president allow a child to take their place for 15 or 20 minutes and they can make suggestions about issues that affect children.

I am proud of our Children’s Day because no other country has a day like this.
