Dhruvi
Dhruvi
Diwali

Hello. My name is Dhruvi and I am nine years old. I’m going to tell you about a festival called Diwali. It is a celebration of light and it is the Indian New Year.

We have special sweets like jalebi, gulab jamun and laddu. My mum makes the sweets (mithai) and my brother eats most of them. It’s a family celebration and sometimes we go to my cousins’ house or they come here.

We have special decorations like candles (divo) inside and outside the house. My mum makes rangoli patterns out of coloured powder. The powder feels like sand and sometimes we follow and pattern or sometimes we just draw what we like.

We have fireworks (fatakada) in our garden and we invite the neighbours round to see them. We give each other presents (bhet), cards and money.
